Warhammer 40,000 – Tyranids – Barbgaunts – 51-28
This is a web-exclusive item – different discounts apply to this than to the regular Games Workshop range.
The Barbgaunts are living artillery weapons of the Tyranid Hive Fleets. Their bodies are fused with biological cannons and controlled by a parasitic synapse-like control, making them feel less like independent predators and more like walking weapon platforms of the Hive Mind.
Biological fire support for Tyranids
On the battlefield, Barbgaunts are ideal for Tyranid players who want to give their army extra ranged pressure. Where Hormagaunts and Genestealers want to tear the enemy apart in melee, Barbgaunts provide supporting fire to hinder enemy units, threaten objectives, and support the swarm's advance.
They fit well into armies that want to build pressure with multiple layers: small gaunts for board control, monsters for direct threat, and Barbgaunts as biological artillery that forces enemies to account for fire from a distance.
Barblaunchers and ganglio-parasites
Each Barbgaunt carries a large barblauncher, an organic weapon that perfectly matches the Tyranid theme of living ammunition, spores, spines, and Hive Mind-driven evolution. The parasitic form on their back makes them visually different from Termagants or Hormagaunts and gives the unit a clearer “bio-artillery” appearance.
This set is a nice addition alongside Termagants, Neurogaunts, Tyranid Warriors, Neurotyrants and other Leviathan-era Tyranid models.
Painting fun with carapace, flesh and bio-weapons
For painters, Barbgaunts are a strong project to develop your Hive Fleet scheme. The models combine gaunt-like bodies with large organic weapons, allowing for plenty of contrast between skin, carapace, claws, and the barblaunchers.
Think of sharp carapace highlights, pale skin, glossy slime effects, venomous weapon openings, and subtle color gradients around the parasitic bioforms. Bases with alien biomass, cracked Imperial floors, acid pools, jungle ground, or overgrown ruins perfectly suit their role as part of an advancing Tyranid invasion.
