Warhammer Tone Pro Shading Medium is a colorless painting medium that allows you to thin Tone Pro paints and make them more transparent for controlled shading, glazing, and smooth color transitions. The medium helps you retain existing colors while reducing opacity and gaining greater control over building depth.
Greater control over shadows
Shading Medium is designed to make paint more transparent without simply adding large amounts of water. This allows you to gradually build up darker tones in recesses, folds, and other shadow areas.
This makes the medium particularly useful when you want to create subtle shadows without harsh edges or sudden color shifts.
Ideal for the Tone Pro color system
The medium works well in combination with the five sequential tones within a Warhammer Tone Pro color range. For example, you can thin a dark Tone 1 or Tone 2 to apply soft shadows over a lighter base color.
Lighter tones can also be processed with Shading Medium as transparent glazes to further soften transitions between different color steps.
Suitable for glazing and controlled washes
Shading Medium is especially useful for techniques where multiple thin, transparent layers are built up. Think of glazing on skin, fabrics, armor, monster hide, and large surface areas.
In addition, you can use it to make paint flow more like a controlled wash, where you decide for yourself how much pigment and shading intensity you want to maintain.
Usage
Mix a small amount of Shading Medium with your chosen Tone Pro paint until the desired transparency is reached. Then, apply the thinned paint in thin layers and let each layer dry before building up additional shading.
For subtle results, it is better to use multiple light layers than one heavily thinned, thick application.
